The White Pig

This past weekend my husband and I ventured south to stay at The White Pig Bed and Breakfast for his birthday.  It is a vegan bed and breakfast and animal sanctuary located on a picturesque farm just outside of Charlottesville, VA.  The owner uses the income from the inn to support the private sanctuary where she cares for rescued pot-bellied pigs, two horses and a few cats.

It was a real treat to drive just a few hours from home and spend the weekend communing with nature and some of the sweetest little (okay, maybe not so little :)) pigs I’ve ever seen.  There are a lot of reasons why this place was special from the PINK decor and impressive (largest ever?) pig memorabilia collection to the socially conscious business practices and amazing vegan pancakes in the morning.  However, what made the weekend extra special was that we were able to disconnect from the world and enjoy each other’s company without distraction.

The farm is tucked away a few miles from the main road and there is no cell service or internet connection.  This meant that we couldn’t lounge around and “hang out” while checking emails and reading the internet, a favorite pastime of ours lately :).  Instead, we spent the evenings talking, snuggling, and enjoying being together.  It was very nice to spend time removed from our phones and appreciate why we went there in the first place. Sometimes it is easy to forget that the world existed without Gawker and Facebook (gasp, I know) and that the best things in life are real and not located on a screen.
