{Weekday Getaway} Playa Negra, Vieques PR

Welcome to 2014, friends! Now that the holidays are over it’s time to get to posting all of the photos from our trip to Puerto Rico last month! One of my favorite things that we did was take a little hike to the black sand beach on the island of Vieques. This place was extraordinarily beautiful and secluded, yet very hard to find.

Vieques is not very big but it has a lot of different beaches, each one with it’s own distinct personality. It’s great because you can visit multiple beaches in one day and feel like you traveled to different islands to see them. When we saw on the map that there was a black sand beach, we knew we had to visit. One of our favorite memories from our honeymoon in Greece is laying on the black sand beach in Santorini {i.e., me: gazing at beautiful Greek men, er, I mean, at my new husband! :)} so this was right up our alley.

What we didn’t realize about this beach was that we had to park the car on the side of the road {next to the poorly marked spray painted arrow on the median directing us to the beach} hike a mile down from the road through a jungle stream bed, wade through two feet of a muddy lagoon {that my husband convinced me was full of piranas!}, fight off giant mosquitoes and jump over 5 downed trees from the previous night’s monsoon {thank you, rainy season}. But once we got there and saw the view, it was totally worth it! There was no one on the beach but us and that was incredible. Thank you Vieques for showing us your beautiful scenery and introducing me to what I now refer to as “jungle foot.” It took me two weeks to get rid of the rash from that mud walking! It’s the journey, people! :)

Happy 1st Thursday in 2014! Yay!
